Foster’s Gold

Hello all,

Today I bring you another ubiquitous beer, Foster’s. However, this is not their usual offering of bland, unpalatable lager, this is their ‘premium version’. Spoiler: also bland and only slightly palatable.

Beer: Foster’s Gold

Brewery: Royal (Heineken, UK)

Fosters Gold - Australia - smooth lager with a creamy light bitterness weak bread flavour refreshing medium carbonation - 4o8 abv - 6() 10
PilsnerPilgrim: Check out Amazons Top Deals in Beer, Wine, and Whisky! – Click Here!

Impressions: This was a smooth light lager. A very light bitterness with a creamy, ‘off-corn’ bread flavour. Not as strong as the usual weird Foster’s flavour. Medium carbonation, and refreshing.

ABV: 4.8%

Score: 6 / 10 (Low Average)

Verdict: Better than the standard Foster’s. That isn’t saying much really considering the original Foster’s is one of the few beers I actively avoid. This isn’t a much better option, especially considering the raise in price. Avoid.

Wychwood – Wytchcraft Ale

Hello again,

Third in my series of Wychwood beers, today I bring you it’s namesake ale. http://www.wychwood.co.uk/

Beer: Wychcraft

Brewery: Wychwood (Marstons), England

Wychwood's Wychcraft - mild blonde slightly acidic refreshing lager 7 o5 () 10

PilsnerPilgrim: Check out Amazons Top Deals in Beer, Wine, and Whisky! – Click Here!

Impressions:
This is a smooth, light ale (bordering on lager like freshness). Light in colour but not lacking in bitter hops. Refreshing cereal notes with a lingering bitterness mixed with a nice citrus backing. Light in body. Medium to low carbonation.

ABV: 4.5%

Score: 7.25 / 10 (Good to Very Good)

Verdict: This is a nice light ale that has a good amount of bitterness. The lower ABV of this beer counts slightly against it as it has a very light body that could use a kick (but could also count toward it on a hot summer day). Well worth a try.

Wychwood – Snake’s Bite

Hello all,

Today I bring you my first, shall I say, hybrid beer. A unique offering from the Legendary Wychwood Brewery (http://www.wychwood.co.uk/), a mix between Lager and Cider, this one certainly intrigues.

Beer: Snake’s Bite

Brewery: Wychwood (Marstons), England

Wychwood Snake's bite - England - very smooth ale with very sweet apple notes married with light cereal beer notes very odd fruit beer confusing medium low carbonation - 4o2 abv - 6o5 () 10
PilsnerPilgrim: Check out Amazons Top Deals in Beer, Wine, and Whisky! – Click Here!

Impressions: This is a very smooth cider / beer combination. However, it is very sweet. Strong apple notes are blended with light cereal hops and bitterness. Medium to low carbonation.

ABV: 4.2%

Score: 6.5 / 10 (Average)

Verdict: This is an odd one. It’s beer.. but.. but it’s cider. And a very sweet one at that. It wasn’t bad. But it wasn’t great. Definitely different and definitely worth a try if you enjoy Belgian style fruit beers. Weird.

Cruzcampo Gran Reserva

Hello everyone,

Today I bring you another beer from my travels through Spain. A good example of a Spanish take on the Germanic ‘Bock’ style lager. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bock

Check out Cruzcampo Gran Reserva’s cool website here: http://www.cruzcampogranreserva.com/

Beer: Cruzcampo Gran Reserva

Brewery: Grupo Cruzcampo, Heineken Espana, Spain

Cruzcampo Gran Reserva - Spain - smooth Spanish lager strong flavour semi bitter semi malt some dark chocolate notes - 6o4 abv - 7 () 10

Impressions: This was a smooth darker Spanish lager. A light bitterness is well married to a sweet (light) dark chocolate malt. Medium to low carbonation.

ABV: 6.4%

Score: 7 / 10 (Good)

Verdict: I was a bit let down by this beer. I had high hopes for a rich chocolate malt married to a decent amount of bitterness. The high ABV makes one think it will have quite a bit of punch. Unfortunately it has these qualities to a lighter extent. Overall a good beer though that could use a bit more body and depth.

Xingu Black Beer

Hello Lager drinkers,

Following on with my Brazil theme, today I bring you a beer that is actually palatable (re: Brahma is awful). Check out their awesome website here: http://www.xingubeer.com/site/

I have great respect for this brewery as they’re trying to bring awareness to the masses and are allied with rainforest protection campaigns.

Beer: Xingu Black Beer

Brewery: FEMSA Cerveja Brasil, Brazil

Xingu Black Beer - Brazilian Stout - very smooth dark and sweet lightly carbonated heavy literally creamy flavour low Abv 4o6% - 7o5% () 10

Impressions: This was a very smooth dark lager. Heavy and sweet with dark roasted malt notes. A blend of creamy and bitterness throughout. Low carbonation.

ABV: 4.6%

Score: 7.5 / 10 (Very Good)

Verdict:  I really enjoyed this beer. Very dense and packed with malt and sweetness, it really hit the spot. If only the ABV were a bit higher to give it a little kick, as it was just a tad on the mild side. Otherwise, definitely worth a try for stout and lager fans alike.

Brahma

Hello all,

Today I bring you one of Brazil’s largest beer exports, Brahma. Check out their website here: http://www.brahma.com.br/

I’ll be straight up with you from the get go, I do not like this beer.

Beer: Brahma

Brewery: Anheuser-Busch, InBev, Brazil

Brahma - Brazil - smooth lager with mellow bitterness floral notes but with a weird mushroom flavour medium carbonation - 4o3 abv - 4 () 10

Impressions: This is a decently smooth lager. However, it has low bitterness with a tiny amount of floral notes hidden beneath a weird bread, corn, and mushroom flavour. Medium carbonation.

ABV: 4.3%

Score: 4 / 10 (Awful)

Verdict: This is a shocking beer. I bought this even though I knew I didn’t like it just so I could photograph it. You see what I do for all of you. It’s really just unacceptable. Being neither refreshing nor flavourful, I can’t honestly sum up how this is still available on the market. It has a low ABV, a weird taste, and is highly over priced. Avoid at all costs.

FIX Hellas

Hello fellow travellers,

Today I bring you another in my Greek series of beers. Another lager that helped me cope with the gorgeous sunshine and warm summer breeze blowing across the picturesque island of Santorini. Again, purchased from a little market north of the beaches at a very reasonable price, probably around $1 euro.

Beer: FIX Hellas

Brewery: FIX, Athens, Greece

Fix Hellas - Athens, Greece - very smooth lager low bitterness very refreshing not much body but perfect for a hot day semi sweet notes of honey medium low carbonation - 5 abv - 7o25 () 10
PilsnerPilgrim: Check out Amazons Top Deals in Beer, Wine, and Whisky! – Click Here!

Impressions: A very smooth lager with low bitterness. Not much body, but very refreshing. Semi sweet notes of honey and vanilla in the background. Medium to low carbonation.

ABV: 5%

Score: 7.25 / 10 (Good to Very Good)

Verdict: This was a very enjoyable beer. At first it seemed like a fairly average lager, but then semi sweets notes started to break out in the background bringing a nice balance of bitter and sweet. Nothing remarkable mind you, but perfect for a hot Greek summer holiday.
