Today I bring you one of the Badger Ales I’m more partial to, as it hits many of the qualities I look for in an ale. Check out the Badger range of beers here:

Impressions: This is a very smooth ale with a nice bitterness. A fruity hops note is in the foreground with sweet vanilla and caramel notes leading to a clean finish. Medium to low carbonation leads to a nice blend between ale and lager drink-ability.

ABV: 5%

Score: 8 / 10 (Excellent)

Verdict: I like this beer. I have had it quite a few times now. The majority of times have been filled with delicious taste and enjoyment. Unfortunately my last exposure to this beer wasn’t too positive (perhaps an off bottle, these things do happen). However, on the whole, a nice semisweet beer that ticks many of my boxes. A decent ABV to give the beer body and kick, flavours that blend and complement the bitterness, and a drink-ability that has brought me back more than once. Highly recommended.

Badger – Tanglefoot – Hall and Woodhouse III

Today I bring you another beer from the delectable Badger brewery.

Impressions: This was a very smooth, straw coloured ale. Sweet malt and caramel flavours at the forefront, with notes of soft pear hiding at the back. A medium to mild hops bitterness throughout, leads to a creamy finish and after taste. Medium to low carbonation.

ABV: 5%

Score: 7.25 / 10 (Good to Very Good)

Verdict: Tanglefoot was a nice light ale. The blend of sweet and bitter was definitely appetising, but the overall body left a bit desired. Perhaps a touch more hops would have really set this one apart. But as it stands, still a really enjoyable, easy drinking ale. Maybe not one for those that stay away from the sweet stuff.

Backyard Brewhouse – Bad Santa Stout

Today I bring you a delicious little number from the recently established Backyard Brewhouse brewery!

Founded in 2008, this microbrewery produces a wide range of beers, from the generic Bitters and IPAs, to seasonal brews such as ‘Summer’ and ‘Kris Kringle’.

I wish I could review ‘Lionheart’ for you today, as it’s St. George’s Day (Happy SGD!), however, I have only had the pleasure of reviewing ‘Bad Santa’, and it was a pleasure.

Beer: Bad Santa

Brewery: Backyard Brewhouse, Walsall, England

Impressions: This was a very smooth, creamy stout.  Sweetness immediately hits your tongue with notes of caramel and vanilla. This is followed through by a chalky, medium to low bitterness. There is a lingering sweetness in the full bodied stout, as the low carbonation makes this beer easily sippable.

ABV: 6.8%

Score: 8 / 10 (Excellent)

Verdict: This was a pleasant surprise, having never heard of the brewery. Many of these limited edition Christmas ales have been generic, nothing-special ales, however, this was good. Very good. Some might say excellent. A very well put together stout, with a well balanced sweetness and bitter profile. The high ABV gives it a nice kick and it is overall a really enjoyable experience. Too bad this may never come around again.

LIVE UPDATE: Old Pulteney Single Malt 12 Year Old Whisky

Today I bring you a recent Tesco purchase (£24, down from £31), Old Pulteney Single Malt 12 Year Old Whisky.

A quick Wikipedia synopsis: ”

The Old Pulteney Distillery is a malt whisky production and aging facility in the Pulteneytown area of WickCaithness, in the Highland area of Scotland. The distillery produces the Old Pulteney single-malt whisky at a number of ages and has a visitor centre in Huddart Street.

The distillery was established in 1826 AD in the name of Sir William Pulteney (who died in 1805), and for whom Pulteneytown is named. The distillery is the most northerly on the Scottish mainland and was quite inaccessible, except by sea, when established. Barley was brought in by sea, and the whisky was shipped out the same way. Many of the distillery workers were also employed as fishermen. The herring fishing industry is no longer part of daily life in Wick but the distillery continues to operate, producing a Highland single-malt with a reputation as one of the finest available. Characteristics of the whisky are attributed to exposure to sea air during maturation.”

Whisky: Single Malt, 12 Year Old

Distillery: Old Pulteney, Wick, Scotland


Impressions: Without water: Quite a strong, smooth charred bitterness. Light caramel and wood, followed by a strong saltiness. With water: Strong caramel nose. Sweet caramel start with a strong, smooth, and very salty finish with a fair amount of finishing burn.

ABV: 40%

Score: 7.25 / 10 (Good to Very Good)

Verdict: This is a nice smooth whisky, with light caramel notes. For me, there is a nice, but almost too strong salty flavour. My tastes are much more geared toward sweeter / smokier whiskies, and this one misses the ‘great’ mark for me. Nice, but probably not a repeat buy for me, though if you enjoy a saltier ‘taste of the sea side’ drink, this might be a great buy for you!

SPAIN: Let’s revisit España

My first post on Spanish beer ( was on the delectable Legado de Yuste.

Today I bring you THREE more Spanish beers to drool over!:

Beer #1: Alhambra Export

Brewery: Mahou-San Miguel, Spain

Alhambra - Spain - smooth Spanish lager very refreshing low bitterness medium carbonation weak taste - 6o25 () 10

Impressions: This is a smooth lager, with low bitterness (and flavour). However, very refreshing, and the medium carbonation keeps it lively.

ABV: 4.6%

Score: 6.25 / 10 (Low Average to Average)

Verdict: There isn’t much to say about this. Little in the way of hops/cereal bitterness or flavour in general. However, it is refreshing and inoffensive  so it gets an average.

Beer #2: A.K.Damm

Brewery: Damm, Barcelona, Spain

AKDamm - Spain - very smooth Spanish lager medium carbonation light bitter taste with notes of coffee and caramel very refreshing 4o8 abv - 8o25 () 10.K-1

Impressions: This was a very smooth lager. An interesting marrying of bitter coffee and sweet caramel/vanilla notes, accompanying a light hops bitterness. Medium carbonation keeps it refreshing.

ABV: 4.8%

Score: 8.25 / 10 (Excellent to Very Excellent)

Verdict: I was highly surprised by the lager. The combination of two of my favourites flavours (bitter coffee and sweet caramel/vanilla) bumped this beer well above the typical lager mark. Rich in flavour, though still very light and refreshing, I highly enjoyed it. Try one.

Beer #3: Cruzcampo

Brewery: Heineken, Spain

Cruzcampo - Spain - smooth Spanish lager medium carbonation mild taste slight bitter finish refreshing but pedestrian - 4o8 abv - 6o25 () 10

Impressions: Another smooth Spanish lager, with medium carbonation. Like Alhambra, it has a mild taste with a light bitter finish.

ABV: 4.8%

Score: 6.25 / 10 (Low Average to Average)

Verdict: Another refreshing, light lager. Mild and drinkable, which was quite nice on the hot Spanish nights! (Man in background also enjoyed a few cervezas).

Erdinger Hefe Weissbier – Mmm

Today I bring you one of my favourite, mass produced, globally available, wheat beers.

From their website: “At the world’s largest wheat beer brewery, tradition and progress go hand in hand”,    “The beginnings of Erdinger Weissbräu date back to 1886, the year in which construction of a wheat beer brewery in Erding was first officially recorded. After several changes in ownership, the General Manager at the time, Franz Brombach, bought the brewery in 1935 and re-named it Erdinger Weissbräu on December 27, 1949.”

The Beer: Erdinger Hefe Weissbier

Brewery: Erdinger Weissbräu, Germany

Impressions: This is a very smooth wheat beer. From the picture, you can see the medium to high carbonation, that results in a nice, rich head, with an effervescent body. Sweet notes of caramel, vanilla, and apricot marry nicely with the wheat and cereal flavours.

ABV: 5.3%

Score: 8.5 / 10 (Very Excellent)

Verdict: This is a delicious beer. Again, I’m partial to sweeter, stronger beers and this ticks both those boxes (somewhat). Smooth, flavourful, and lively, this is a beer that will please. That said, wheat beers are distinct from their barley brother in that the cereal taste is significantly heightened. This may please some, but it is definitely a curve ball. A delicious curve ball that deserves a buy. Very excellent.
